“Dr. Strange marked 1 of the Top launches of all time as this Summer box office kicked off“– Paul Ebeling
Marvel Studios and Disney’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, grossed $187-M in its debut to land 1 of the biggest openings of all time domestically, and the 2nd best of the VirusCasedemic era for a global start of $449.4-M, according to updated weekend numbers released Monday.
The sequel’s performance is a huge victory for Hollywood and theater owners as the Y 2022 Summer box office season officially kicks off. After more than 2yrs of fits and starts due to COVID-19, studios are finally ready to release a parade of delayed tentpoles.
Overseas, Marvel’s latest tentpole opened to an equally impressive $262.4-M, the final number was slightly below Sunday’s estimate of $265-M. And, when comparing like-by-like territories, it ranks sixth on the list of all-time worldwide launches for a Hollywood title and 4th among MCU global opening weekends, according to Comscore. The pic opened #1 in all major markets overseas.
Doctor Strange 2 is playing in 4,545 theaters, the widest location count of the VirusCasedemic era and the 5th biggest of all time, another sign that the movie business is emerging from the chaos. While overall attendance is still down compared to normal times, moviegoer confidence is at an all-time high.
Have some fun this week, see a movie in a theater, the chaos is over. Keep the Faith!
