“That cup of coffee you had this morning provides more than an energy boost. Health benefits of a good cup of coffee range from reducing your risk of diabetes to lowering your risk of liver disease and early death”–Paul Ebeling
It is important to understand the importance of choosing a quality grown, organic coffee bean. Organic coffee is free of synthetic fertilizers and chemicals used in growing, production or processing. As a bonus, organic coffee beans provide more healthful antioxidants, and you can certainly taste the difference.
Sweetened or not sweetened
A study has determined that in comparison to non-coffee drinkers, individuals who consumed moderate amounts of coffee (1.5 to 3.5 cups a day) sweetened with sugar or unsweetened were less likely to die during 7 years of follow up. The results for individuals who made use of artificial sweeteners were inconclusive.
Prior research looking at the health benefits of coffee have determined that coffee consumption is linked to a reduced risk of death but did not distinguish between coffee consumed with artificial sweeteners or sugar and unsweetened coffee.
The researchers found that throughout the 7 yrs of follow up, individuals who consumed any amount of coffee that was unsweetened were 16 – 21% less likely to die compared to individuals who didn’t drink coffee. They also found that individuals who consumed 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee sweetened with sugar each day were 29 – 31% less likely to die compared to individuals who did not drink coffee.
According to this data, physicians can inform their patients that there is no need for the majority of coffee consumers to eliminate the beverage from their eating plan.
Note: Remember that coffee is beneficial as long as it is taken in moderation. Like any food or drink, excessive consumption can be harmful so make sure you consume only 2-3 cups of coffee per day. Choose fresh, organic, roasted beans.
